Apex Legends Mobile is entering beta this month

It’s been a long time since we heard about a mobile version of Apex Legends, but we’ll see more of it very soon: EA announced that a regional beta for the game will debut later this month. Initially, the publisher says the game will be available to “a few thousand players in India and the Philippines alone,” but the plan is to roll it out to more countries during the year.

The company also provided some of the first details of the game. Most importantly, it will not be a port of Apex Legends, but instead of a new version built for smartphones. “Mobile Apex Legends specially designed for touch screens, with simpler controls, and thoughtful optimizations that lead to the most advanced battle royale battle available on a phone, ” Apex Legends game director Chad Grenier wrote in a blog post. This also means that it will not include any kind of cross play or cross sequencing. And like the PC and console version of the game, Apex Legends free on mobile.

These types of mobile-exclusive spinoffs are becoming more and more popular for large multiplayer games. A riot was launched recently Wildfire, smartphone takes on League of legends, while Psyonix does something similar with Rocket League Sideswipe. PUBG Portable, meanwhile, remains one of the most popular games in the world, recently surpassing 1 billion downloads.

Main version of Apex Legends has just hit a new milestone of 100 million players, and last month expanded the game to the Nintendo Switch.
