Former Gujarat Interior Minister and former Chairman of Gujarat Milk Marketing Cooperative Federation (GCMMF), Vipul Chaudhary, was arrested by Gujarat Police Crime Investigation Department (CID), Crime and Railways, the Sunday for an alleged Rs 14.80 crore bonus scam.
Chaudhary’s arrest comes weeks before the Mehsana Dudhsagar Dairy elections, which are scheduled for January 5 next year.
GCMMF markets its products under the ‘Amul’ brand.
Chaudhary was also a former head of the Dudhsagar dairy when, in 2014, he was fired from the GCMMF and Dudhsagar dairy after facing corruption charges in connection with a Rs 22 crore cattle feed scam. Under the scam, the GCMMF was supposed to send cattle fodder to Maharashtra.
A senior CID Crime official confirmed to The Indian Express that Chaudhary has been arrested.
“After the Rs 22 crore forage scam, the court tribunal in 2018 had asked Chaudhary to pay 40% of the scam amount to GCMMF, amounting to Rs 9 crore. In this sense, Chaudhary and four current officials of the Mehsana Dudhsagar dairy hatched a conspiracy by virtue of which they committed a fraud of 14.80 million rupees, the money destined to the bonus of 1,932 workers of the dairy company. An FIR was recently filed at the Gandhinagar CID Criminal Police Station after a whistleblower approached us. We had detained Chaudhary on Saturday night from Gandhinagar and he was arrested today. He has been booked under sections of the Corruption Prevention Act and sections 409 of the Indian Penal Code for criminal breach of trust by a public servant, 408 for criminal breach of trust by the clerk, 120b for conspiracy criminal, ”said a CID official.
