Jakarta: An Indonesian Navy submarine went missing near Bali. The Indonesian military said there were 53 people on board the submarine.
Military chief Hadi Tajzanto said the KRI was participating in the Nanghala 402 training program, but the schedule was yet to be made available. Singapore, which has submarine vessels to search for the submarine, said it had sought the help of Australia.
Local media reports said the navy believed the submarine had sunk to a depth of 700 meters. There is no immediate information on why it was missing.
This submarine was built in Germany and has been in service since the early 1980s. It is rehearsing for a missile fire exercise on Thursday. The event is expected to be attended by Tajanto and other military leaders.
Indonesia currently has five submarines and plans to operate at least eight by 2024.
Indonesia has been facing increasing challenges to its maritime claims in recent times, including several incidents involving Chinese ships near the Nechuna Islands.
