WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday announced sanctions against 17 officials from China and other foreign governments, as well as their immediate family members, for serious human rights violations.
On Human Rights Day, the Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, in a statement, said the United States proudly reaffirms its commitment to use all available appropriate tools and authorities to draw attention to human rights violations and abuses no matter where or when they occur, and to promote accountability for those responsible for these violations and abuses.
“Today, the Department announces the public appointment of 17 foreign government officials and their immediate family members under Section 7031 (c) of the State Department, Foreign Operations and Related Program Allocations Act 2020, as extended by the Assignment Continuity Act of 2021, due to the involvement of officials in serious human rights violations, “the statement read.
Those appointed include people from El Salvador and Jamaica.
From China, the State Department also appointed Chief Huang Yuanxiong of the Wucun Police Station of the Xiamen Public Security Bureau for his involvement in serious human rights violations in Xiamen, China.
Pompeo said Huang is associated with particularly serious violations of Falun Gong practitioners’ religious freedom, namely his involvement in the detention and interrogation of Falun Gong practitioners for practicing their beliefs.
