Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who has gone from a successful career in Bollywood to making a mark in the American film and television industry for the past decade, said on Friday she has a new dream: to flood Hollywood with Indian talent.
At the 18th Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Chopra Jonas and her husband, pop icon Nick Jonas, spoke on a number of topics, including the importance of streaming platforms, filming movies in the midst of a pandemic, and his enduring love for India.
Chopra Jonas detailed his plans for his production company, Purple Pebble Pictures, which works in both India and the United States in multiple languages and platforms. The actor is handling a full plate of roles, starring in movies ranging from White Tiger to The Matrix 4.
“My greatest joy with Purple Pebble is creating a cast of South Asian movies and TV shows in Hollywood. We haven’t seen it very often, ”he said. “Really my mission is to try to attract as much Indian talent to Hollywood as I can.”
In their shoot, the couple’s first joint interview with an Indian media outlet, entertainment icons also emphasized the romance and magic of big screen cinema, but insisted that streaming services are here to stay, especially due to the pandemic that has claimed 1.5 million lives worldwide.
And Chopra Jonas announced plans for his next Hindi movie, scheduled for next year.
For Jonas, whose production Dash and Lily airs on Netflix, over-the-top platforms are a great alternative experience to cinema at a time when going out isn’t always possible.
“There is certainly room for both … when things go back to normal, the experience of going to the movies, having popcorn and a drink and watching a great movie is so unique and so special. he said.
“I’m excited to go back to the theater, she (Chopra Jonas) knows that I’m a fan of popcorn in the theater, so I’ll be looking forward to that.”
Chopra Jonas agreed, adding that streaming services are already an essential part of the evolution of entertainment, especially as many people in India still do not have access to television or fixed line electricity and consume content on their phones, using internet data.
“It’s smart and smart to get ahead… we should be on the right side. I certainly am, ”he added.
She argued that theatrical releases have an inherent romance and charm, but it wasn’t a mutually exclusive choice: go out when you want and stay when you don’t.
“I feel like sometimes in India we think of streaming services as second best after theater when it comes to storytelling. I don’t agree with that, ”he said.
He also liked that the platforms select feeds individually and praised the independence to create any type of content knowing that there will be an audience through it, through a streaming service. “There is a power in that.”
Jonas, who recently reprized his role as a mentor on the long-running American talent show The Voice, said it was great to be filming again, but added that it was very different on set from the previous season a year ago.
“Being able to come back and be on set is kind of nice. Everyone is taking the necessary protocols and taking this seriously, ”he said. “The fact that it can be done safely … there is an exuberance on set … it’s great to see that we can get back on set.”
When asked about his future plans, Chopra Jonas opened up about the White Tiger, an upcoming movie on Netflix based on Aravind Adiga’s 2008 Booker-winning novel.
“I am looking forward to making a film in Hindi… I hope I can make one by the end of next year. I’m chatting with some people and we’re trying to come together to make a really fun Hindi movie, ”he said.
Jonas also mentioned his love for India, where he got married in a fairytale wedding in 2018, and everyone called him “jiju” (brother-in-law).
The couple have been back multiple times, including for Holi and Diwali, and Jonas shared his love for Indian food.
“And so many sides stuck in your face. Jiju has been given so many sides, ”Chopra Jonas put in.
But why universally “jiju”? Jonas had an explanation. “Priyanka is the country’s sister in a way and I’m happy to be the sister’s husband… it’s a beautiful thing,” he said.
At this, Chopra Jonas laughed and said, “I have become the sister since you married me … before I was not a sister.”
