Enhancement: Power and design

For the first time, Microsoft has released two game consoles at the same time: Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. At Rs 49,990, Series X is the more powerful of the two. Microsoft has changed the design template with the X Series. The console has a matte black finish and has what some may call an industrial design. Ports are kept to a minimum – there’s a USB port next to the pairing button and a really slim Blu-ray disc drive with an eject button.

You can also lay the console on its sides. At the rear, there is a ventilation grill. Even after long gaming sessions, not much heat dissipated. There is also an HDMI 2.1 port, an Ethernet jack, and two additional USB ports on the back. Microsoft has covered the ports bit with a variety of options.

The controller also has a matte finish and comes in black. The buttons respond. It didn’t give us any problems while we played for hours.

There are four face buttons, along with the View, Menu, and Xbox buttons. Two bumpers, two triggers, and two sticks round out the controller. You’ll also find an expansion port and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom. A USB-C port, along with a pairing button, sits on the top of the controller. It’s 2020, but Microsoft still has a battery box of two AA batteries to keep the controller running for hours.

The Xbox Series X is powered by a 7nm Project Scarlett chip. It has AMD’s eight-core Zen 2 CPU, AMD’s Navi-based RDNA 2 graphics chip that combines to deliver 12 teraflops of GPU power. Also on board are 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD.

All of these specifications combine to deliver blazing fast speed. Game load times are quick and when you combine frame rates (120Hz), you get absolute power. The 1TB storage sounds sufficient, but in reality, today’s games are too heavy. For example, NBA 2K21 is over 100GB, while Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is approximately 47GB. The Xbox user interface is still a bit underwhelming and Microsoft should have updated it.

Xbox Series X also supports streaming apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime. It’s a powerful gaming console and it’s a compelling case for being your next expensive purchase.
